Pharmacy School Mistakes: What They Don’t Teach You But You Need to Know

by | May 7, 2024 | Blog, Pharmacy Student

Pharmacy school gave me the foundational knowledge I needed to pass the Naplex and get my license. But what it didn’t teach me was how to navigate my career as a pharmacist. It’s a gap that affects thousands in our profession.

You see, traditional pharmacy education is focused on academic excellence. Memorize, regurgitate, and pass exams — that’s the formula. But what about identifying where you excel as a pharmacist? How do you stand out among the hundreds of thousands of pharmacists out there? These are questions they don’t address in school.

I remember my own experience vividly. Early on, I took a class on career paths, but it was forgettable. The system places so much emphasis on academic achievement that career development often takes a back seat. What if instead of just theory, we had practical, multi-year internships across different specialties and organizations? What if from day one, we had assessments tailored to our strengths, guiding us towards the right career path?

I believe in a more personalized approach to education. Whether you thrive in soft skills or excel in hard skills, your education should reflect that. We need continuous career development throughout our schooling, not just a one-time lecture. Imagine if every semester, we were actively building towards our future careers.

As Brandon Sanderson says, “Journey before destination.” It’s not about rushing into the perfect job right after graduation. It’s about enjoying the process, embracing every opportunity to learn and grow. Comparing yourself to others only steals your joy. Everyone’s journey is unique, and focusing on your own path is key.

Taking ownership of your career is crucial. Treat it like you’re building a business from scratch. Explore your interests, volunteer, and connect with professionals in your desired field. Follow your curiosity, learn as much as you can, and be enthusiastic about every new experience. Your passion and dedication will attract opportunities naturally.

In conclusion, we need a shift in how pharmacy education approaches career development. It’s about empowering students to take control of their futures from day one, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. By embracing this proactive mindset, we can build fulfilling careers that align with our passions and strengths.
