Quitting CVS – How this Pharmacist Transitioned into a Happier Pharmacy Job

by | Mar 19, 2019 | Success Story

John, previously a pharmacy manager at CVS Health, knew he wanted something more out of his career but efforts to challenge himself by taking on additional responsibilities had yielded little result.

He was looking for a change but didn’t know where to go or how to get there.

When CVS eventually consolidated the field leadership structure and eliminated John’s position by combining it with front store operations, John had no choice but to make the move.

He cast a wide net but says that nothing came in. He lacked experience for some positions and the necessary connections for others.

“It was certainly frustrating. I felt trapped. I was very close to resigning myself to working in an unhappy role for the next 40 years.”

Focus your efforts

John now realizes that he had attacked the job search with the wrong mindset.

The HappyPharmD helped him adjust his aim.

“Once I figured out what I was truly passionate about, I was able to focus all my efforts on achieving it. Working with Alex helped me do that. I realized it was going to work out when I got a response from a company for a position in which I had no prior experience; the updates Alex helped make to my resume made all the difference.”

John landed a new job with Omni Care and was excited to learn that they offer many opportunities to specialize; he was anxious to find his niche.

“I identified Operations as a passion of mine. There are just so many ways now to move up. If later, I decide to try Automation or Inventory Management, for example, I can move into either of those areas as well.”

“I honestly believe that, had I not taken the necessary steps to make a change in my career, I would still be suffering in my previous role. Or, I might just have given up altogether and moved on to an entirely different field.”

Invest in yourself

John compares hiring a career coach to hiring a financial advisor; it is an investment in your future with someone who has your success as their goal.

“It is very liberating now to have a clear path in my chosen career. I wake up and look forward to going to work again. I have purpose and I relish the daily challenges. I think my wife is happier too because I’m not bringing misery home with me every day.”

“If you are not happy with what you are doing now or think you could be happier, do yourself a favor and check out the services that Alex provides.  I am so happy that I did. The personalized and individualized attention that I received really helped me get where I wanted to go.”
